The cast is lights out here. Tatum gives the performance of his career in a dark turn as Mark and Ruffalo might score an Oscar nomination for being the one ray of light as his older brother David, who only has the best intentions for Mark and his future.
It is Carell though, who steals the show. You always read about how comedians, whom Carell is more popularly known as, all have a "dark side" in them which is where they get there comedy from that allows them to make shockingly effective transition into drama think Jim Carrey in "Truman Show" and Robin Williams in "Insomnia" and he will go down as another prime example of that here.
Du Pont is a man of privilege who, like Mark, is trying to find a way to make his mark on the world and seek the approval of others.
He is socially awkward, maybe even a coward and uses his money and family "dynasty" as its referred to in the film, to give him a sense of entitlement to gain respect from others.

Olympic wrestling champions and brothers Mark Schultz and Dave Schultz join "Team Foxcatcher", led by eccentric multi-millionaire John du Pont , as they train for the Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, but John's self-destructive behavior threatens to consume them all.
Director: Bennett Miller. On Jan. The Oscar-nominated film Foxcatcher , chillingly, was not so far off from the true story.
John E. He ran one of the premier wrestling training camps in the world — a camp that, under the leadership of Olympic gold medalist Dave Schultz, churned out champions the world had never seen.
But du Pont threw this all away with the pull of a trigger — and no one has ever quite understood why. His family raised thoroughbred horses on their acre farm in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, where a young du Pont wandered the grounds obsessing over birds and wildlife — a small refuge from an isolated childhood.
Inside his mansion, du Pont was an incredibly lonely child. His father was rarely at home and his siblings, who were far older than him, barely acknowledged that he was alive.
The only friend he thought he had was the son of his chauffeur — although, in time, du Pont would find out that his mother had paid the boy to pretend to like him.
He later earned a doctorate in natural sciences and founded the Delaware Museum of Natural History. But still desperate for a sense of value in his life, du Pont turned to wrestling.
He had tried other sports too, like swimming and a pentathlon, for which he even earned a spot on the Olympic team. He had lost both testicles after an injury in a horse riding accident and contact sports like wrestling were forbidden to him growing up.
The injury may also have compounded his crippling insecurity and need to compensate. Regardless, or perhaps in part because of this, du Pont wanted to be as involved in the sport as possible.
John du Pont had learned to become desperate for approval and belonging. He was determined to build a team of Olympic champions and the wrestling community welcomed his generosity with open arms.
Mark claims that he deliberately threw his Olympic trial match just to keep du Pont from getting the satisfaction of the win.
By , du Pont had replaced Mark with his brother Dave Schultz.
I practiced enough to where I was good at hitting the jug from fifty feet, which I knew was the distance from a group of bushes at his mansion to a person walking up the steps from the driveway.
Mark even planned the crime in such detail he said he planned to sell everything he owned, drop out of society, sleep in his car and wait for du Pont to leave his mansion before killing him.
Mark even wears Dave's own glasses in the movie. He said he would then move to Brazil and have a child with a Brazilian woman so he could avoid deportation.
He ultimately decided against the plan. Life story: Mark Schultz has written his own memoir, Foxcatcher, which is out now. Mark moved to Utah, where he married his ex-wife Kristy and took a job as a coach at Brigham Young University.
He spent 11 years there and his children, son Mark David — named for his brother — now 21 and a personal trainer, and daughters Kelli, now 19, married and pregnant, and Sarah Jessica, now 15, were born there.
As Dave's wife Nancy ran outside, du Pont drove off, prompting a hour standoff with police as he barricaded himself in the property.
Devastated after being told of the news of his brother's death by his father, Mark was banned by cops from going to the estate. He then went through the ordeal or facing du Pont every day at a trial.
He was sentenced to years in jail. In love: Dave Schultz was a devoted family man. He's pictured with his wife Nancy in Dedicated: Nancy Schultz launched a charity to provide financial aid for wrestlers after her husband's death.
Following the guilty verdict, Nancy Schultz, Dave's widow, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against du Pont. But still, this did not stop du Pont from trying to reach out to the family whose lives he had shattered.
Oscar-nominated director Bennett Miller then started developing what would become Foxcatcher in Beloved: Dave Schultz's children today - daughter Danielle left and his lookalike son Alex right.
Tribute: Danielle Schultz posted a gorgeous picture of her riding a pony as a little girl, led by her dad Dave. Some things never change: Danielle Schultz all grown up and still a keen horse rider.
I love the film. Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo went through grueling wrestling training for seven months, while Carell undergoes an incredible transformation as du Pont.
I knew it was Steve dressed up — but for a fraction of a second I thought du Pont had come back to life. He was focused on staying in character, so I kind of left him alone.
But he really got du Pont's mannerisms and speech pattern. The last time I saw it, I kind of let the past go. Convicted: John du Pont is wheeled out of the courthouse on February 24, during deliberations in his trial where he was found 'guilty but mentally ill' of third degree murder in the shooting of Dave Schultz.
He died in prison in December He was lonely and isolated and that can have a detrimental effect on anybody. I got my happiness back and wrote my story.

Mark claims that he deliberately threw his Olympic trial match just to keep du Pont from getting the satisfaction of the win. By , du Pont had replaced Mark with his brother Dave Schultz.
Mark and Dave Schultz were the only two brothers in sports history to win freestyle wrestling medals in the Olympic Games in and the World Championships, where Dave won in and Mark won in The boys were even honored by then-president Ronald Reagan.
Dave Schultz, left, with brother Mark, right. Indeed, over the years in his training facility, du Pont had become increasingly harder to work with, much less connect to.
Dave Schultz had turned out to be a godsend for Foxcatcher Farm. Most importantly, he was the only person who could handle John du Pont.
After John du Pont lost his mother in , his sanity started to crumble. Life at Foxcatcher Farm became a living hell. He opened fire on a flock of geese because he became convinced that they were using dark magic against him and he removed all the treadmills from the building when he became convinced that they were turning back time.
He hired security contractors to check his floorboards for secret tunnels and his walls for the hidden intruders he was sure were spying on him during every moment.
He even pulled a machine gun on wrestler Dan Chaid. I cowered to him just enough to get him to back off. Then he left. I told local police.
The next day I went to the local courthouse, put in a report there, then the county courthouse. He was definitely getting closer and closer to doing something where somebody was going to get hurt.

Du Pont eventually developed a strong interest in wrestling. In , he provided the funds for Villanova University to found a wrestling program and build an athletic arena, with the stipulation he get the chance to serve as head coach.
Amid charges of sexual abuse and other indiscretions against the wealthy benefactor, the program was dropped two years later.
Undaunted, du Pont built a world-class athletic facility and formed the Foxcatcher National Training Center on his Newtown Square estate for the country's top wrestling talent.
He renamed the estate Foxcatcher Farm after his mother died in , and devoted his attention to his stable of athletes. Long known for his eccentricities, du Pont began displaying increasingly alarming behavior after the death of his mother.
He spoke of seeing ghosts in the walls of his home, and asked to be introduced as the Dalai Lama at one world-championship wrestling meet.
On January 26, , du Pont shot and killed wrestler Dave Schultz, a Olympic gold medalist who was training for a comeback at the Atlanta games.
After a tense two-day standoff at Foxcatcher Farm, du Pont was lured outside and captured after police turned off a boiler.
